I was already inside the tomb when I realized the entrance had sealed.
Adventure Mummy loaded on five reels that didn’t glow — they exhaled. Twenty paylines carved through symbols I recognized as warnings: scarabs with too many legs, ankhs that bent at wrong angles, a mummy whose wrappings moved between spins like something underneath was still deciding its shape. €0.80 and the first spin didn’t land symbols. It placed them. Deliberate. Positioned. And I felt the air in the room change temperature.
A scarab landed on reel three. Alone. Its legs twitched once — just once, I swear I saw it — and then it was static again. More spins. More scarabs appearing in pairs, forming weak clusters that paid €2.40 or nothing, and I started watching the mummy in the background instead of the reels because her eyes kept reflecting light that wasn’t coming from my screen.
The tomb walls at the edges of the interface started closing. Not visibly. Perceptibly. Like the frame of the game was compressing inward and I had less space to breathe and I kept spinning because stopping felt like admitting I’d noticed.
Three Scatter symbols landed — golden masks, all of them grinning — and the reels didn’t transition to Free Spins. They collapsed. The grid folded inward like stone slabs slamming shut and suddenly I was in a chamber I didn’t remember entering with ten Free Spins and the mummy standing closer now, not in the background anymore, just there, at the edge of reel five, watching.
First Free Spin: scarabs everywhere. Six of them connecting across three reels, paying €16, and I felt the mummy lean forward — not move, lean, like her posture had shifted in a single frame and I’d missed the transition.
Third spin: a Wild appeared. Golden mask. Covered reel two completely. Symbols around it connected, paid €28, and the Wild didn’t substitute politely. It occupied. Forced symbols to form around it whether they belonged together or not.
Fifth spin: nothing landed. Just empty positions where symbols should’ve appeared and the reels kept spinning anyway, slower now, like the mechanism was grinding through sand.
I started counting my breaths between spins. One breath in. One spin. One breath out. I don’t know when I started doing this. Just realized I was syncing my breathing to the reels and couldn’t stop because stopping meant the rhythm would break and something in the tomb would notice I’d broken it.
Seventh spin: two more Wilds. Reels one and four. Both golden masks. Both grinning. And I watched them lock into position and understood the Wilds weren’t helping me win.
They were marking where the mummy had decided symbols should stay.
The Free Spins ended. Total: €87.
Not huge. But the way it paid felt wrong. Like the amounts had been decided before the feature triggered and the spins themselves were just demonstration. Proof the mummy could pay if she decided I’d survived the chamber long enough to deserve extraction.
Back to base game. My balance read €147. I’d started with €80. And I kept spinning because the tomb walls were still closing — I could feel it, not see it, just feel the edges of the screen compressing — and the mummy was still there, closer now, her wrappings shifting with movements I couldn’t track because every time I looked directly at her she was static again.
A jackpot symbol appeared. Top right corner of the screen. Not part of the reels. Just there. Glowing. Labeled “MAJOR: 1,500x” and I didn’t remember it being there before but it must’ve been because jackpot meters don’t just appear mid-session they’re always there you just don’t notice them until they start mattering and I realized I’d been staring at it for thirty seconds without blinking.
More spins. The jackpot symbols started appearing on the reels — gold coins with crowns — and I needed five to trigger the Major. I landed two on spin forty-seven. Three on spin fifty-one. Four on spin sixty-three. And the fifth kept almost landing. Reel five would spin and I’d see the jackpot symbol one position above the payline, hovering, and the reel would stop one click too early and the symbol would sit there just out of reach and I started whispering “one more, one more, one more” and I don’t know if I was talking to the reel or the mummy but something was listening because the mummy’s eyes reflected my screen’s glow directly back at me.
Spin eighty-four: all five jackpot symbols landed.
On reels one through four.
Reel five landed a scarab.
One symbol off.
And I felt something in my chest crack — not my heart, something behind it — and the mummy’s wrappings unwound half an inch and I saw skin underneath that looked like mine and I closed the game before she finished unwrapping.
My balance when I closed it: €34.
I’d started with €80. The tomb was still there in my browser history. I could see the thumbnail. The mummy standing at the edge of reel five. Her wrappings still unwinding in the freeze-frame.
I haven’t opened it again.
Not because I lost.
Because when I checked my reflection in the black screen after closing the tab my eyes were reflecting light that wasn’t in the room.
And my breathing was still synced to a rhythm I couldn’t hear anymore.
And somewhere behind me something shifted position.
Not in the room.
In the tomb I’d left open.
The one I thought I’d closed.
But the entrance had sealed before I’d realized.
And the mummy doesn’t let you leave.
She just lets you think you left.
While she unwraps.
And waits.
For you to come back.
Because you will.
Because the tomb isn’t on the screen.
It’s in the breathing.
And I’m still breathing her rhythm.
Even now.
One breath in.
One spin I’m not taking.
One breath out.
And she’s still unwrapping.
