The first bombs arrived because the grid had embarrassed itself.

Thirty-six symbols had landed between two fortified bear kingdoms and failed to produce five friends.

No armour cluster.

No shield formation.

No useful gathering of hammers.

Not even five clubs willing to stand beside one another during a military emergency.

The board sat between the red spring fortress and the blue winter fortress, completely full and strategically worthless.

Then Bomb Frenzy activated.

The orange bear raised a burning sphere.

The blue bear lifted a frozen one.

Three bombs dropped onto the grid with the energy of two brothers discovering that poor symbol placement could be corrected through weather-based demolition.

One Fire Power Bomb landed near the centre.

Another stopped two cells above it.

The Ice Power Bomb arrived beside a lonely purple hammer.

The first fireball exploded vertically and painted several cells with x6.

The second detonated across a horizontal line with x4.

Where the two blasts crossed, the cell became x10.

The grid now contained no victory, but one square had acquired enough multiplier damage to require a warning sign.

Then the ice bomb cracked.

Blue light travelled left, right, up and down.

Purple hammers appeared inside its reach.

One hammer replaced the frozen bomb itself.

Another formed above it.

Two more arrived along the row.

The original hammer suddenly found itself surrounded by identical tools produced from concentrated cold.

Five connected.

They burst.

The win passed through the x10 cell.

More symbols dropped.

Orange goggles landed across one of the x6 scorch marks and formed another cluster.

The whole emergency paid €18.24.

The grid had started with no winning symbols and ended by using fire to increase property values while ice manufactured hammers.

That was my introduction to Boombear Bros.

I had selected €0.80 because the screen already looked capable of damaging local infrastructure without financial encouragement.

The orange bear stood on the left beneath cherry blossoms, red fortress walls and enough exposed explosives to make spring appear irresponsible.

The blue bear occupied the right beneath snow-covered pines and an icy castle fitted with cannons.

Both wore goggles.

Both held bombs.

Neither looked old enough to be trusted with soup.

Between them sat the six-by-six grid, framed in wood with snow stuck to one corner and green moss climbing another. Shields, green armour, orange goggles and purple hammers appeared on coloured tiles. Hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades occupied the darker stone squares, apparently having wandered into an inter-fortillery conflict with no protective equipment.

The first ordinary wins were quiet.

Five green armour symbols connected near the bottom and disappeared.

New tiles fell.

A Fire Power Bomb landed near the left edge.

It exploded horizontally.

Half the blast struck useful cells.

The other half encountered the boundary and ended.

The bomb had selected a direction, discovered geography and lost an argument with the frame.

Several positions gained x7.

The bomb transformed into a blue shield.

No other shields were nearby.

One piece of protective equipment now sat alone inside a freshly scorched section of battlefield.

The cascade stopped.

At the start of the next spin, every multiplier vanished.

The bear brothers did not preserve base-game blast damage.

They bombed the grid, failed to use the crater and rebuilt the entire fortress floor before trying again.

An Ice Power Bomb arrived in the top-right corner later.

It cracked after a dead arrangement and attempted to spread green armour through its reach.

The edge limited the explosion.

Three new armour symbols appeared.

Together with the original, there were four.

Five were needed.

The blue bear had frozen several military jackets into existence and still failed to dress a squad.

The four pieces remained arranged beside the snowy fortress until the spin ended.

Across the screen, the orange bear held his fireball and looked delighted by his brother’s textile shortage.

Clusters came in short bursts.

Blue shields paid.

Orange goggles formed a group and cascaded into hearts.

A Fire Bomb placed x15 down a vertical strip, then transformed into a purple hammer while every other hammer landed outside the affected cells.

The x15 glowed beneath it.

Nothing connected.

The most valuable square on the battlefield had been reserved for one tool.

The Scatters were wooden crates packed with bombs.

One landed in the lower corner.

Its fuses continued burning while the other thirty-five symbols pretended not to notice.

Two appeared together several spins later.

The third did not arrive.

The bears had delivered two crates of explosives to a fort already operated by bears carrying explosives and somehow remained underprepared.

A natural feature tease brought three Scatters and then replaced one during the final drop with a club.

The club settled beside the bomb crates with the confidence of a symbol that had just prevented twelve Free Spins using botany.

The actual trigger came during a small shield cluster.

The shields burst.

Fresh tiles fell.

One Scatter landed near the top.

Another stopped low on the left.

A third arrived in the centre.

The fourth crate dropped beside the snowy edge.

Four sets of fuses lit at once.

The two forts disappeared behind smoke.

Maximum Blast opened with twelve Free Spins.

The orange bear and blue bear stood together beneath the grid, each holding his preferred form of climate damage.

Every Power Bomb would now explode in all four directions.

The multiplier marks would remain between spins.

The battlefield had stopped repairing itself.

Any crater created from this point onward belonged to the feature.

The first Fire Power Bomb landed slightly left of centre.

Its cross-shaped blast placed x5 across a row and column.

The symbol transformed into orange goggles.

No goggles connected.

The blast remained.

On the following spin, an Ice Bomb cracked two positions away and added blue shields through its own cross.

Six shields joined.

They burst through one x5 cell and paid.

New tiles dropped into the gap.

The first multiplier mark had found employment.

Another Fire Bomb arrived near the centre and released x7 through four directions.

One affected cell already carried x5.

It became x12.

The stone square glowed orange beneath a purple heart.

The heart sat there looking romantic in a location that had now survived two explosions.

Nothing joined it.

The next spin brought a bonus Scatter.

One extra Free Spin entered the counter before the crate changed into a red spade.

The spade joined four others nearby.

They connected.

The former bomb crate had extended the siege, removed its own fuses and immediately enlisted as a playing card.

The cluster burst through the x12 cell.

More symbols fell.

A small group of green armour followed.

The multiplier scars remained beneath everything.

By the middle of the feature, the grid looked less like a battlefield and more like a multiplication table recovered from a fire.

An x5 sat near the upper left.

Two x7 cells crossed the middle.

An x8 occupied the lower row.

The x12 remained under changing symbols, waiting for something expensive enough to step on it.

The bombs did not arrive in useful places every time.

One Fire Bomb detonated near the bottom edge and sent half its cross into the wooden frame.

It left x15 beneath two clubs and one heart.

The orange bear had unleashed one of the largest available blasts to increase the tactical importance of three low symbols.

An Ice Bomb later copied orange goggles across the right side.

Four connected.

One more sat diagonally beyond them, close enough to see the group and too far away to participate.

The blue bear had produced protective eyewear for every position except the face requiring it.

Then a spin landed with no win and no Power Bomb.

The grid paused.

Both bears looked upward.

Bomb Frenzy began.

Four bombs dropped.

One Ice.

Three Fire.

Maximum Blast forced every one of them to explode as a cross.

The first Fire Bomb threw x8 across the centre.

Its horizontal line passed through the old x12 cell.

That square became x20.

The second bomb added x15 along another cross.

The shared centre climbed to x35.

The third arrived with x6 and struck the same position again.

x41.

One cell in the middle of the grid had now been hit by three separate fireballs on top of earlier damage.

The stone tile continued existing out of professional stubbornness.

Around it, x8, x15 and x6 marks glowed across intersecting rows and columns.

The entire board looked as though the orange bear had tried to draw a snowflake using only arson.

Then the Ice Power Bomb exploded.

It chose purple hammers.

The blast planted them above, below, left and right.

One position independently received the red bear Wild instead.

The Ice Bomb transformed into another hammer.

The original grid already contained three nearby.

They joined.

Nine purple hammers connected through the central x41 cell.

The Wild stood among them holding a black bomb and grinning with the special confidence of a bear who had entered an explosion to improve tool storage.

The hammers burst.

The multiplied win landed at €78.40.

Tiles dropped through the smoking spaces.

Orange goggles filled the lower half.

Seven connected through an x15 cell and another carrying x8.

They exploded for €26.88.

More symbols fell.

Blue shields gathered around the centre but stopped at four.

The x41 cell remained underneath one of them.

A fifth shield landed two squares away.

The strongest multiplier on the board had become a fortified viewing platform for a group that refused to meet minimum attendance.

The cascade ended.

The feature continued with the x41 still burned into the middle.

That single cell dominated every remaining spin.

A green armour symbol landed there.

No cluster.

A purple heart took its place later and found only three companions.

Then the blue bear appeared as the premium symbol on the x41 square, holding a bomb and smiling beneath white goggles.

Four more blue bears landed elsewhere.

Only two connected to him.

The tundra’s most heavily multiplied polar bear had been isolated by his own relatives.

One final useful cascade connected orange goggles through an x8 mark and paid €12.80.

The last two Free Spins produced bombs, but not combinations.

A Fire Power Bomb increased several cells already carrying values, spreading more orange numbers across the board after most of the useful symbols had apparently evacuated both forts.

The final Ice Bomb added hearts.

They formed two separate groups of four.

Eight hearts were present.

None could agree on physical contact.

The blue bear had frozen affection across the battlefield and created two incompatible families.

Maximum Blast ended at €137.12.

The feature total appeared while both bears celebrated beneath the grid.

The orange one raised his firebomb.

The blue one held a block of ice.

Behind them, the red fortress remained surrounded by cherry blossoms despite repeated thermal incidents. The blue fortress remained covered in snow after spending twelve Free Spins beside enough firepower to alter a small climate.

The base game returned.

Every progressive multiplier disappeared.

The x41 crater vanished.

All thirty-six cells presented clean stone again.

I left the stake at €0.80 and allowed one final spin.

A Fire Power Bomb landed in the upper-left corner.

It contained x20.

The bomb exploded as far as the edge allowed, sending multiplier fire rightward and downward while the rest of its intended reach struck empty space beyond the grid.

It transformed into green armour.

No other armour landed close enough.

The x20 glowed beneath one military jacket at the corner of the battlefield.

No cluster formed.

No cascade followed.

The spin ended.

The orange bear still held another burning bomb beside the spring fortress.

The blue bear still waited with ice outside the snowy one.

Between them, the lone green armour sat over the cooling x20 mark.

Nobody came to wear it.
