Three eyeballs had landed along the bottom row and Electric City was about to discover why skulls were invented.
One sat on the left.
Another near the middle.
The third had arrived on the right beneath a K that still believed it was a letter.
All three opened.
Six shots left the grid at once.
Pink trails crossed upward.
One eye went diagonal.
Another headed for the top.
A third found the glowing right-hand Energy Field and came back.
Symbols turned Wild in its wake.
A rebound struck a Wild that another eye had created seconds earlier.
Flash.
Multiplier.
Another loose eye reached the opposite side and came back through a second Wild.
More electricity.
More pink.
By the time the movement stopped, Electric City had fewer recognisable symbols than functioning eyeballs.
That was spin seven of No-Brainer.
The beginning had been much more medically responsible.
I was on €1.00.
Dr Zappo stood beside the reels in a white coat, purple goggles and the expression of a man whose laboratory had stopped requiring lids on containers.
Mr Brain rode behind him.
Actual brain.
Contained.
Protected.
Excellent work, Mr Brain.
The city itself rose around the grid in bright comic-book buildings, cables and electrical equipment. An EYECREAM sign sat farther down the street.
Useful.
The neighbourhood had correctly identified its growth industry.
The first spins behaved.
Js crossed for €1.40.
A gadget line produced €2.60.
A robot found enough relatives for €3.20.
Then an Eyeball landed along the bottom row near the right.
Pink iris.
White globe.
Long nerve trailing underneath.
There was no socket nearby looking for it.
The eye fired diagonally left.
A paying symbol vanished under pink Wild.
Then another.
The Eyeball reached the end of its route and became Wild too.
Three Wilds now cut across the reels.
€7.80.
Dr Zappo remained beside the experiment.
The man had released an eye through three symbols and somehow his coat was still the least stained object in the district.
Next spin, the Wild trail was gone.
Fresh symbols.
K.
Q.
Robot.
Gadget.
The city had repaired its eyesight overnight.
Another €1 produced nothing.
Then a second Eyeball arrived along the bottom row.
This one went straight upward.
One symbol became Wild.
Another became Wild.
The eye joined them.
A useful line crossed the vertical pink scar.
€9.20.
Electric City had found a form of ophthalmology where the patient was the reel.
Several spins followed without major injury.
One FS symbol appeared and left alone.
Another came later with no partner.
An Eyeball landed beneath a bad collection of symbols, fired through them and managed €2.40.
Even destructive eyesight still needed paylines.
Then one eye reached the perimeter.
It launched diagonally toward the right.
First symbol became Wild.
Second followed.
The glowing Energy Field caught it at the edge.
Back came the eye.
New angle.
Another symbol turned Wild.
Then the returning eyeball hit one of the Wilds already sitting in its route.
The collision flashed.
x3.
The eye finally became Wild itself.
One organ had crossed the grid, struck Electric City’s electrical fence, bounced back through traffic and hit its own damage hard enough to add multiplication.
€18.60.
The EYECREAM shop was going to need a larger sign.
I kept €1.00.
The bonus options stayed untouched.
There was no reason to pay extra for laboratory access while eyeballs were already escaping into public electricity at standard admission.
Another Eye fired up-left.
A paying symbol became Wild.
It reached the top Energy Field.
Bounce.
Back down-right.
Another Wild.
Then another.
€13.40.
The grid reset.
Fresh symbols took the places of everything the eye had just damaged.
Dr Zappo had discovered renewable typography.
A few spins later, two FS symbols landed together.
They disappeared without a third.
Next spin brought one.
Then nothing.
The feature stayed shut.
The eyeballs did not.
One landed along the bottom-left and fired through a Q and a robot.
Both became Wild.
The eye joined them.
€5.20.
Then the laboratory lost both eyes at once.
Two Eyeballs landed along the bottom row, one toward the left and another toward the right.
The left eye went diagonally toward the centre.
Wild.
Wild.
The right eye shot upward.
Wild.
It reached the top Energy Field.
Rebounded.
Its return route crossed one of the Wilds created by the first eye.
Flash.
x5.
The reels now contained two separate ocular crime scenes connected through the same win.
A matching symbol reached them from the left.
Another line ran lower down.
The counter climbed through €10, then €20, and stopped at €34.80.
Two detached eyeballs had independently crossed the city and accidentally achieved binocular vision.
Mr Brain remained securely attached.
The smartest character had chosen not to travel.
The balance had moved above where Dr Zappo found it.
Then the city went quiet.
Quiet meant normal eyes stayed inside whatever had originally owned them.
Several €1 spins disappeared.
A small line returned €1.60.
Nothing.
Two FS symbols again.
No more.
An Eyeball landed and produced a short Wild route worth €4.40.
Some of the profit leaked back into Electric City.
Then the FS symbols finally arrived with enough company.
Four comic-book bursts landed across the grid on the same spin.
No-Brainer.
Ten Free Spins.
The name appeared while Dr Zappo stood next to Mr Brain.
Mr Brain had been consulted and was being ignored.
First Free Spin.
Eyeball along the bottom row.
It opened.
One shot went straight up.
The other went diagonally.
Two routes from one eye.
The first converted two symbols.
The second cut across another.
The Eyeball became Wild at the end.
€6.40.
A single eye had been given two lines of sight.
Depth perception had been achieved through violence.
The next spin produced no Eyeball and €1.80.
Then two arrived along the bottom row.
The first eye shot upward and up-right.
The second fired up-left and toward the top.
Four routes.
Pink Wilds spread through the grid.
One path reached an Energy Field.
Bounce.
The returning eye struck a Wild.
x2.
Another route converted two more symbols before ending.
€14.20.
The grid had started resembling an optician’s chart designed by lightning.
Next spin.
One Eye near the bottom-right.
Its first trajectory cut diagonally left.
Wild.
Wild.
The second went upward.
It reached the top Energy Field.
Back down.
One more symbol lost its identity.
The eye ended as Wild.
Three connected Wilds carried €11.60 into the feature total.
Electric City was slowly losing nouns.
Robot became Wild.
K became Wild.
Gadget became Wild.
Q became Wild.
Anything that an eyeball could see was one electrical accident away from becoming W.
The next Eye bounced from the left field.
Its return path clipped an existing Wild.
x3.
€8.80.
Then another spin brought two eyes whose routes crossed most of the centre without finding a strong line.
Pink everywhere.
€3.20.
The city had suffered extensive ocular damage for less than four euros.
Then came the spin from the beginning.
Three Eyeballs along the bottom row.
Left.
Centre.
Right.
No-Brainer gave each two trajectories.
The first fired upward and diagonally right.
The second went up-left and up-right.
The third sent one shot toward the top and another toward the right Energy Field.
Six moving eyes.
The grid lit from several directions at once.
A robot disappeared under Wild.
A Q followed.
Another paying symbol became Wild before the eye carrying the damage reached the Energy Field.
Bounce.
The eye came back.
Hit an existing Wild.
x2.
Another eyeball reached the top field.
Rebound.
Its return path entered the same contaminated region.
Flash.
x5.
A second Wild elsewhere caught another collision.
Multiplier.
The original three Eyeballs reached the ends of their trips and became Wild too.
For a moment the fourteen paylines were trying to cross a grid where the remaining ordinary symbols looked like civilians sheltering between pink squares.
The wins started.
One line found the first multiplier.
Another crossed the x5.
A third ran through two multiplier Wilds.
The counter moved through €18.
Then €37.
Then €61.
Stopped at €72.40.
Three eyes had fired six times, bounced off Electric City twice and left enough Wild eyesight behind to make the original reel symbols look endangered.
Dr Zappo’s white coat remained spotless.
The city had lost most of its ophthalmology.
Next Free Spin.
One Eyeball.
Two shots.
€8.20.
Another spin gave nothing.
Then two eyes arrived together along the bottom row.
One trajectory bounced from the right Energy Field and sliced back through a Wild patch created by the other eye.
x3.
Several matching symbols reached the new Wilds.
€17.60.
The feature passed €110.
One later spin scattered Wilds without finding much money.
€4.80.
The last Free Spin began.
The reels slowed.
Then an Eyeball appeared at the bottom of reel four.
It opened.
First shot diagonally left.
Wild.
Wild.
Second shot straight up.
The eye hit the top Energy Field.
Back it came.
The return trip struck a Wild created by its own first trajectory.
Flash.
Multiplier.
The eye had managed to shoot the city, bounce off the ceiling and collide with its own earlier work.
A matching line reached the damage from the left.
€31.20.
No-Brainer closed around €155.
The electricity around the feature dropped.
Ordinary symbols returned.
Dr Zappo and Mr Brain remained beside the grid.
Electric City still had buildings.
The session sat roughly €96 ahead.
I gave it one final €1.
K.
Robot.
Q.
Then an Eyeball landed along the bottom row on the right.
One direction again.
Diagonal left.
A symbol became Wild.
Another followed.
The eye became Wild at the end.
€2.20.
No Energy Field.
No ricochet.
No second shot.
One loose eyeball simply crossed the neighbourhood and left three Wilds behind.
The next €1 stayed untouched.
The electric border continued crackling around the reels.
Mr Brain was still securely contained.
Electric City had learned the expensive way why the rest of us keep eyeballs in pairs.
I muted Toad’s Bounty. I still heard it laugh.
