The torch bit me before the dungeon did.
I’d been prodding the screen with the usual €0.80—safe, unnoticed—when the flame jumped the frame, hissed up my wrist, and dragged my balance after it. Dungeon: Immortal Evil was open, impatient, and already rearranging stones to fit my disappearance.
Corridor one breathed damp iron. My little knight—more cursor than hero—tapped forward while I pretended this was still a slot. The walls flexed. Symbols didn’t roll; rooms unfolded. First doorway: nothing but dust and a rat the size of a coin. My balance twitched down €0.80 anyway, like the air charged rent.
Second doorway spat a skeleton onto the tiles. Ribcage full of loose change, eye sockets full of judgment. One click. Sword blinked. Bone cracked. Chest popped. €6.40 in copper shards. Small mercy, loud promise.
I should’ve left then, when the torchlight still obeyed geometry. Instead I tasted heat and went deeper.
Third room, fourth—routine. Goblin. Spider. Minor steals, minor squeals. The game kept coughing coins just often enough to feel conversational. I watched the health bar hover smugly at full. The corridor angled left. Something under the floor gears clicked like it had picked a lock inside the code.
Fifth room opened too wide. Marble, pillars, silence. A boss? No—worse—empty anticipation. My knight walked three steps, tripped a glyph, and the Bonus Portal sheared the ceiling off. Gravity flipped. I fell up.
Landing chamber: crimson stone, chains, a demon carved entirely from overdue bills. The screen zoomed until I could smell ozone under the brimstone. Health bar halved on approach, no attack yet—just intimidation rent. I jammed the spin key. Sword swung, sparks flew, first hit whiffed. Balance skimmed €0.80 for the privilege of missing. Demon laughed without lungs.
Second swing connected. Critical. Screen flash so bright the battery whimpered. Health bar sliced a sliver off the monster; loot meter coughed €12 and pretended it was enough apology. I kept swinging. Each attack another spin, each spin another invoice. Some returned change, most didn’t. I felt both poorer and taller.
The demon’s counter-blow tore half my health in one animation. My heartbeat thunked loud enough to syncopate the background drums. I glanced at balance: down maybe €22 since corridor entry—numbers slippery now, jumping when looked at. I should’ve dropped stake. Couldn’t. Fingers sticky.
Next spin hit. Loot chest cracked: new sword skin plus €28.10 that tasted like metal shavings. Rage meter glimmered—mechanic? emotion? Didn’t care. Demon staggered. Two spins later I landed another critical, loot bar blinked €44, demon’s knees folded. Final strike cost me €0.80 and paid nothing—until the body burst into flame and the chest behind it belched.
Gold poured. Coins big as dinner plates, numbers stacking faster than breath. €83.70 by the time the shower quit. Health restored. Corridor re-stitched itself around my shrinking caution.
Balance read €148—above start—brain said stop. Dungeon said forward.
Torchlight colder now. Seventh room: swarm of bats. Five spins, barely a nibble. Eighth: mimic chest stole €6 and my self-respect. Ninth: thin bridge, nothing spawned, yet the floor tried to invoice me for crossing. Silent theft is still theft.
The tenth room smelled archived. Moss, parchment, old data. Stone door groaned shut behind. Middle of floor: glowing circle. Boss round again. Not demon—dragon husk draped in chains, eyes like overdue jackpots. Health bar of the beast long, sneering.
First spin: miss, dragon tail swipe, health chunk gone. Second: glancing hit, €4 drizzle, tail again, red vignette at screen edge. I considered fleeing—no button for that. Spin three landed sword, small, €3.20, but procced some hidden stun; dragon froze, loot icon materialised: potion doubling next payout. Spin four hit for €9 and doubled to €18; humour of malfunction—big fanfare for pocket change.
Dragon thawed, roared, flame breath. Health bar dipped to final quarter. One more hit and run? Or die? Spin five—critical, loot €26, stun again. Rage meter on hero peaked; UI shook. Berzerk overlay. Weapon flared white. Next spin auto-triggered, free of charge, sword cleaved through neck. Dragon crumbled like a faulty loan.
Loot chest erupted bigger than last. Gold flood rolled digits: €24, €37, €12, €19, climbing to €96.40 before sealing. Then a slim ruby shard floated out, labelled “Key of Depths.” Collector tracker 1/3 lit. My stomach turned—collect three, unlock something unforgivable.
Balance: €212. Decision point. My fingers didn’t ask permission; they pressed on.
Corridor walls pulsed heartbeat red. Enemies thinned—the dungeon saving energy. Random chest offered €2.10 pity. Another room empty except graffiti: STAY GREEDY. I complied.
Fifteenth chamber rustled like leather turning pages. Spider queen descended, but health bar small. Two spins, two hits, gone. Chest: key fragment two. Tracker 2/3. Balance plus €14, nothing more. Suspense replaced winnings, weightier.
Next five rooms? Blur. Minor mobs, incremental drain. Balance slipped under €200. Torchlight began skipping frames. I kept chasing the third key like a gambler hunts a rumour.
Room twenty-one looked final by architecture alone—vault doors, statues, floor tiled in serpents. Third fragment hovered inside a crystal ahead. I stepped; floor vanished. Boss pit. Giant shadow, then light: some stitched hybrid god wearing cancelled jackpots as armour.
I slammed spin. Miss. Slammed again. Hit €5. Slammed harder. Tail lash, health bar red. One health potion remained from early loot—auto-used on death threshold, bought me four more swings. They cost; they whiffed; they bled cents. Balance crashed through €170, €160.
Penultimate hit landed critical plus multiplier rune I hadn’t seen before—doubled loot, €26 becomes €52, rage refilled, free spin chained, another hit, chest cracked, monster collapsed into pixel ash. Chest tried to release final key but glitched, key flickering inside éclairs of code, half-existing. Screen stuttered. Loot numbers froze halfway: €???. Slots don’t do question marks. This one did.
Flash. Reboot. Corridor plain, no key, no chest, health full, balance sitting at €189.40. The tracker reset to 0/3.
I stared. The torch did too.
Three spins later the screen dimmed politely, connection lost or mercy granted.
Phone reflected my face—sweat, low-battery tremble, grin pulled wrong. Started with €100, walked with €189.40. Profit? Yes. Sanity? Debatable.
Dungeon: Immortal Evil didn’t pay me. It recruited me. I will return. The torch already knows.
Demon Queen made me feel every decimal of pain.
