The red-eyed nun was not a Demon.

This became important.

She stood on reel five in a black habit, smiling with two red crosses glowing where normal eyes usually went.

Beside her were candles, a plague mask, a gargoyle and a skeletal hand clutching a rosary.

The Priest stood outside the left side of the reels holding a cross.

His job was to identify evil.

Apparently the nun had passed inspection.

I started at €260 with €1.20 per spin.

Five reels.

Five rows.

Twenty-five paylines.

The church was dark stone and stained glass, with candles on the walls and praying statues positioned around the reels.

Nothing about the place suggested a relaxed congregation.

The gargoyle had green eyes.

The plague mask had one enormous black socket.

The skeletal hand was technically already dead.

The nun had red glowing eyes.

The first actual Demon did not appear for several spins.

This raised the standard for demonic behaviour considerably.

The opening seventeen spins returned €6 from €20.40 spent.

Candles did most of it.

Yellow.

Blue.

Green.

Purple.

Red.

The church had organised them by colour, which was useful because almost nothing else in the building seemed organised.

A line involving the skeletal hand paid once.

The plague mask helped another.

The gargoyle mostly appeared in pairs.

The nun kept arriving.

No Holy Light.

The Priest held his cross.

Nothing.

Balance:

€245.60.

Then paid spin eighteen stopped with a Demon on reel five.

There it was.

Small horned face.

Fire around it.

Actual Demon.

The Priest responded immediately.

No discussion.

No second opinion.

Holy Light fired horizontally from the left.

There was already a Wild on reel two in the same row.

The beam hit it.

x6.

Then kept going.

A candle vanished.

The plague mask vanished.

Another symbol vanished.

The Demon vanished.

Every destroyed position became Holy Light Wild.

The entire route was now glowing.

This was exorcism by removing the surrounding neighbourhood.

The Demon was definitely gone.

So was almost everything that had been standing near it.

The x6 multiplier went across the new Wild row and the paylines recalculated.

€28.80.

Balance:

€273.20.

That was better.

The Priest lowered the cross.

The next spin contained the nun again.

Red eyes.

Black habit.

Perfectly safe.

I now understood that Holy Wilds was operating with a much narrower definition of demonic possession than the artwork had suggested.

The woman with glowing red crosses for pupils was apparently a civilian.

The green-eyed stone gargoyle was also fine.

Only the small flaming horned face required horizontal divine artillery.

I kept the stake at €1.20.

There was no need for Bonus Boost.

No need for Demon Spins.

The ordinary church service had just produced x6 Holy Light because one Demon chose a bad seat.

Twelve paid spins went by.

€14.40 out.

€3.60 back.

A few candles.

One plague-mask combination.

Nothing larger.

Balance:

€262.40.

Then two Demons arrived on the same spin.

Different rows.

This was where the Priest demonstrated that the cross did not need a cooldown period.

First beam.

Across the upper section.

Candle.

Gargoyle.

Plague mask.

Demon.

Gone.

Holy Light Wilds behind it.

Second beam.

Lower row.

There was already a Wild in the path.

The light crossed it.

x3.

Then continued through a candle and a skeletal hand before reaching the Demon.

The hand had been holding a rosary.

This offered no protection whatsoever.

It disappeared with everybody else.

Two glowing rows cut across the church.

One ordinary.

One multiplied.

The paylines fired again.

€15.60.

Balance:

€276.80.

The Priest had now dealt with three Demons.

Collateral losses included candles, plague equipment, gargoyles and at least one devotional skeleton.

The nun remained untouched.

At this point I stopped trying to understand the admission criteria for Hell.

The next eighteen spins were much quieter.

The game took €21.60 and returned €4.80.

One gargoyle line.

A candle result.

Nothing else.

The balance eventually returned to exactly €260.

Back where I had started.

The Priest had effectively spent the first forty-nine spins exorcising enough of the church to achieve financial neutrality.

Then spin fifty landed three burning Scatter books.

One on the left.

One in the centre.

One farther right.

The church darkened.

The First Exorcism began.

Eight Free Spins.

That name created expectations.

The previous three Demons had apparently been informal work.

This was now the first official exorcism.

€258.80 sat outside the feature.

Free Spin one immediately produced a Demon.

The Priest fired.

Holy Light cleared the row.

No multiplier.

A small win:

€1.20.

The Demon frequency was visibly higher now.

That made sense.

The church had finally announced an exorcism.

The Demons had apparently received invitations.

Another appeared a couple of spins later.

Beam across.

Several candles disappeared.

The gargoyle went with them.

The Demon disappeared last.

€4.80.

The Priest continued to show no hesitation about destroying church property in order to preserve the church.

Two Scatters landed on a later Free Spin.

Not three.

Enough.

Two extra Free Spins were added.

Eight became ten.

The burning books vanished.

The service had been extended.

The red-eyed nun appeared during the next spin.

Still no reaction from the Priest.

I had stopped expecting one.

If anything, she had now survived enough Holy Light incidents to qualify as part of the building.

The best moment of the bonus came late.

A Demon landed on reel five.

An existing Wild sat on the same row farther left.

The Priest fired.

The beam crossed the Wild.

x3.

Light continued.

A blue candle disappeared.

Then a plague mask.

Then the Demon.

The resulting Holy Light Wilds carried the multiplier.

€7.20.

That was the peak of The First Exorcism.

The base-game x6 incident had paid four times as much.

The official ceremony was losing to unscheduled field work.

Two smaller wins arrived before the extended feature finished.

€1.20.

Then €2.40.

The final Free Spin placed a Demon on reel three.

The Priest fired through two positions.

No existing Wild.

No multiplier.

The resulting row failed to make anything useful.

Ten Free Spins ended.

Total:

€16.80.

Balance:

€275.60.

Three-Scatter feature.

Retrigger.

Extra Demons.

Several blasts of Holy Light.

One x3 multiplier.

€16.80.

The first serious Demon in the base game had paid €28.80 by itself.

Apparently exorcism became less efficient once it was officially scheduled.

I played sixteen more paid spins.

The church went quiet again.

One candle line returned €1.20.

Later the skeletal hand managed €2.40.

Another tiny result supplied the remaining €1.20.

€4.80 returned from €19.20 spent.

No new three-Scatter set.

No Demonic Possession.

No Demon King.

No reason to touch the buys.

Final balance:

€261.20.

One stake above the €260 start.

The last screen stopped with a yellow candle near the top, a gargoyle in the middle, the plague mask lower down and the nun on reel five.

Red crosses in her eyes.

Same smile.

The Priest stood to the left holding the cross.

No Demon symbol had landed.

So he kept it lowered.

The nun still had red eyes.
