The Grand Coin landed.
Nothing happened.
Not a small win.
Not a flash.
Not even the sort of ceremonial sparkle normally reserved for something with GRAND written across it.
It just sat there.
A huge piece of treasure inside a volcano.
Worth nothing.
Next spin, a 2x Coin appeared beside a Mystery symbol.
Nothing again.
Lava Power: Hold the Spin had built a mountain full of money and then established that none of it was legal tender until the volcano became sufficiently excited.
I was at €1.00.
Three reels.
Four rows.
No cherries.
No card symbols.
No filler trying to pretend it had a purpose.
Just Coins.
Mini.
Minor.
Major.
Grand.
Mystery.
Special Mystery.
Bonus.
Everything on the screen looked like it should already be paying.
Almost none of it was.
The base game was a display cabinet installed directly above magma.
A 5x Coin could land.
Lovely.
A Mini could appear beside it.
Very nice.
Mystery could drop into the third reel looking as though it contained something important.
The volcano would stare at all three and continue burning underneath them.
Nothing became money until the Bonus Game arrived.
That made every spin feel slightly illegal.
I watched a Grand Coin appear on the first reel and vanish on the next spin without awarding a cent.
Somewhere inside the mountain, apparently, a treasure committee had decided GRAND was only a description.
Two Bonus symbols landed soon after.
One on the left.
One on the right.
The middle reel produced a Coin.
No line.
No eruption.
Gone.
More spins.
Coins.
Mystery.
Minor.
A perfectly attractive collection of volcanic wealth behaving like decorative lava stones.
The balance kept falling.
That was the strange pressure of the game.
There were no ordinary wins to rescue anything.
Either the mountain opened properly or I continued paying €1 to admire expensive objects that refused to become cash.
Then three Bonus symbols landed across the same row.
Left.
Middle.
Right.
Finally, the volcano agreed those symbols had formed a sentence.
The screen ignited.
Power Wheel.
Before the Bonus even started, the mountain rolled out another circular piece of fire.
Naturally.
The reels were already sitting over magma.
The trigger itself was glowing.
Apparently the correct response was to add a wheel.
It spun.
Several prizes passed.
Coins.
Mystery.
Jackpot symbols.
Then it stopped.
Upgrade.
The symbols already sitting on the reels changed.
The 2x Coin melted.
Came back Mini.
The Mystery cracked open and returned as Special Mystery.
Minor climbed into Major.
The wheel had taken the treasure I had finally managed to activate and thrown it back into the volcano for another firing.
Standard was gone.
Super Bonus.
Three respins.
The fifth row appeared above the reels.
Not another row of treasure.
Multipliers.
x1.
x2.
x3.
x5.
A roof made entirely of arithmetic.
First respin.
Minor landed on reel one.
Counter back to three.
Above it, x2 appeared in the fifth row.
The Minor stayed.
The x2 stayed above the column.
The volcano had begun stacking both treasure and instructions for what to do with the treasure later.
Next respin.
Special Mystery.
Reel two.
Reset to three.
Above that column, x3.
Now the middle reel had a sealed volcanic ball underneath and a multiplier sitting over it like a hot rock waiting to fall.
Next spin.
Grand Coin.
Reel three.
Three respins again.
That changed the whole shape of the chamber.
There was now an actual Grand sitting inside the Super Bonus while the fifth row was still collecting multipliers.
The volcano had finally admitted Grand existed.
It was simply waiting until the most combustible possible moment to discuss value.
Blank respin.
Two.
Then Major landed on reel two.
Reset.
A x2 appeared above that same column.
The earlier x3 was already there.
Together, reel two had reached x5.
Nothing had paid yet.
That was the strange beauty of it.
The whole feature was assembling a disaster in advance.
Treasure below.
Multipliers above.
Magma everywhere.
No final total until the mountain stopped receiving new material.
Another spin.
Mini on reel one.
Three again.
x3 appeared above it.
The reel-one roof now held x5 in total.
A Mini and Minor sat underneath.
Ordinarily not the most terrifying collection of coins ever excavated from a volcano.
Under x5, they were beginning to look less decorative.
Then Special Mystery landed on reel three.
Reset again.
x5 appeared in the roof above it.
Now all three reels had serious heat sitting overhead.
Reel one: x5.
Reel two: x5.
Reel three: x5.
The Grand Coin was on the right.
Special Mystery beside it.
Major in the middle.
Another Special Mystery there too.
Mini and Minor on the left.
The 3×4 chamber still had empty spaces.
The mountain was not close to filling itself completely.
But it had stopped looking like a slot and started looking like someone had poured a coin collection into three lava tubes and suspended multiplier boulders over the top.
Then the refills stopped.
First blank.
Two respins.
Nothing.
One.
The held symbols kept glowing.
The multipliers stayed above them.
Last respin.
I wanted anything.
Mini.
Major.
Special Mystery.
Even a x1 in the roof just to keep the eruption alive a little longer.
Nothing landed.
Zero.
The lava stopped moving.
That was when everything finally became money.
The Special Mystery symbols cracked open.
One revealed 25x.
Another 15x.
Then the fifth row came down on the three reels.
x5 on the left.
x5 in the middle.
x5 on the right.
Every piece of treasure below inherited the heat of its own column.
The Mini and Minor on reel one swelled.
The Major and 25x Mystery in the centre took x5.
The Grand and 15x Special Mystery on reel three did the same.
The counter started moving.
Past €50.
Past €100.
The right-hand reel hit hard.
Then the middle.
The total kept climbing until the Bonus settled around €225.
After all those base spins where a Grand Coin could land and accomplish absolutely nothing, the volcano had finally decided to pay everything at once.
The base game returned.
First spin back.
A 5x Coin landed.
Right in the middle.
Bright.
Hot.
Clearly labelled.
No Bonus.
No Power Wheel.
No Hold the Spin.
Nothing paid.
The mountain had spent one feature turning Coins into a small eruption of money and immediately gone back to pretending a 5x Coin was just another rock.
Nobody ordered Mjölnir Splash. It came anyway.
