The Dominion had seven rulers, one empty throne and a serpent occupying four rooms.
The multiplier orb showed x11.
Blue flame rolled around it beside the grid. The number turned slowly above a carved pedestal, lighting the fortress with the confidence of a moon that had recently inherited land.
Seven gold masks had gathered inside Dominion Respins.
One near the top.
Three through the centre.
The others lower down, all staring through identical eyeholes because the kingdom apparently issued one royal face and expected the entire dynasty to share.
Eight matching symbols would have paid.
There were seven.
The missing space had not remained politely vacant.
A Giant green serpent had moved in.
Its head occupied the upper chamber.
Its neck crossed the centre.
Coils filled the lower cells.
The tail had reached a fourth position and looked ready to claim a fifth if nobody produced a lease.
It was the largest living thing in the fortress.
It was not an eighth masked ruler.
The collected court glowed.
The x11 orb tightened its blue fire.
A Symbol Upgrade crossed the grid.
Runes split open.
A red raven climbed into heavier armour.
A blue wolf emerged with metal wrapped around its head and all practical biting equipment left exposed.
A purple sigil unfolded into a horned warrior whose shoulders immediately blocked two invisible corridors.
One lesser creature received a gold hood and became the seventh mask.
The Dominion had promoted almost everything it owned.
The census had become more expensive.
The number of matching rulers remained seven.
The final spaces opened.
A blue rune landed.
Then a purple symbol.
Then a normal green serpent appeared beside the Giant one, a smaller relative arriving late to a royal ceremony and discovering that the family had already occupied the west wing.
No eighth mask.
No winning group.
The x11 orb continued to shine.
The seven rulers continued to rule nothing useful.
The Giant serpent opened its mouth beneath them and appeared to ask whether the empty throne came with the room.
That was how the Dominion Respins ended.
The game had opened while the orb still showed x1.
Grey fog pressed against the fortress walls.
Torches burned inside narrow iron cages.
The 6×6 grid sat between pillars carved with runes old enough to remember when darkness was new.
I started at €1.00 and began counting from the DSF desk because nobody inside the Dominion appeared interested in basic population control.
Blue runes occupied the lower cells.
Green marks glowed along the right.
Purple sigils gathered near the centre.
Creatures arrived among them in fragments of coloured light.
Red ravens with metal beaks.
Blue wolves wearing enough armour to sink in shallow water.
Green serpents curled against stone frames.
Purple horned warriors standing as though doors had always moved aside for them.
Above all of them appeared the gold-masked rulers.
Silent.
Polished.
Framed like portraits that had climbed down from the wall and refused to answer questions.
The first proper gathering came from blue runes.
Eight connected.
They flashed and vanished.
The Avalanche opened holes through the lower fortress.
The orb rose from x1.
Fresh symbols dropped through the ceiling.
Ravens replaced the runes.
Wolves landed among the ravens.
A masked ruler arrived in the centre and inspected the new population without moving its face.
Another group formed from the replacements.
Those symbols disappeared too.
The multiplier climbed again.
That established the local government.
Citizens won.
Citizens vanished.
The orb received the promotion.
Every Avalanche strengthened the number while removing the creatures responsible for it.
The Dominion was not ruled by the masks.
It was ruled by a glowing ball that awarded itself rank whenever eight subjects disappeared.
The early session moved in short bursts of agreement followed by long displays of supernatural incompatibility.
Blue runes could gather.
Ravens occasionally found enough relatives.
Everything else preferred seven.
Seven wolves filled most of one side while a single purple sigil occupied the position they needed.
Seven ravens spread their red wings around a green serpent head.
Seven horned warriors formed a wall with one gold mask installed in the middle, staring from the formation like a monarch who had mistaken a battlefield for a balcony.
The fortress always had enough occupants.
It lacked eight citizens willing to wear the same body.
Then the Giants began arriving.
The first was an armoured wolf.
Its symbol expanded across four cells, metal muzzle glowing blue, ears scraping the upper frame.
Several normal wolves landed around it.
The formation looked enormous.
The Giant occupied the equivalent of a small family estate.
The remaining wolves still stopped short of a proper group.
The creature growled across four positions and contributed mainly to indoor crowding.
When it left, the space filled with four unrelated symbols.
Raven.
Rune.
Mask.
Serpent.
The Dominion had demolished a wolf mansion and replaced it with a supernatural intersection.
The Giant green serpent did better.
It dropped across the left side, scales lit by runes beneath the skin.
The neck rose through two rows.
The body curled below.
Normal serpents gathered around it until the green shape spread through enough of the fortress to pay.
The group vanished in a heavy Avalanche.
The multiplier rose.
More green symbols fell into the opening and found one another again.
Ravens replaced them and formed another broad cluster through the gaps.
The chain kept moving long enough to produce the best base-game burst of the session.
Stone shook.
The torches bent.
One carved block fell from the wall and landed beside a masked ruler.
The ruler did not react.
The masks had no mouths, but their silence carried the deep confidence of people who believed fallen masonry was a problem for lower-paying symbols.
That serpent burst kept the session alive.
The fortress spent the next stretch trying to recreate it by making everything larger.
A Giant horned warrior occupied four cells and left too little room for the purple symbols gathered around it.
A Giant wolf landed beside seven ravens and became the largest possible reason they could not win.
Another serpent stretched through the centre while blue runes gathered above and below, separated by several tonnes of green scales.
The Dominion had discovered Giant Symbols and immediately used them to reduce available meeting space.
Its answer to every crowded room was a larger animal.
The dragon-headed Bonus symbols began appearing inside the confusion.
Metal snouts.
One red eye.
Fire behind the frame.
They looked less like ordinary symbols than pieces removed from a forbidden door.
The first pair arrived while a Giant wolf held the upper-right corner.
Two dragon heads and one animal occupying four cells controlled most of the fortress.
Nothing opened.
The helmets stared across the wolf’s back.
The wolf stared outward.
The orb remained at x1.
Another Bonus pair later emerged from an Avalanche, only for the required continuation to be replaced by a green rune.
The two metal dragon heads remained lit around it.
The rune glowed between them with the serenity of a floor marking that had accidentally delayed an invasion.
When the Bonus formation finally completed, darkness moved inward from the walls.
Stone split behind the grid.
Blue fire poured through the cracks.
The orb lifted higher above its pedestal.
Free Spins opened.
The fortress stopped pretending the multiplier was decorative.
Avalanches began feeding it in broad waves.
Runes vanished.
Ravens replaced them and found groups of their own.
Armoured wolves dropped through cleared sections.
Each successful movement pushed the orb higher.
The number grew.
The fire around it thickened.
At x5, its light reached the masked rulers.
At x7, the torches looked dim beside it.
The Dominion had a full court of gold faces, horned soldiers, armoured beasts and winged red omens.
Everyone bowed to the number.
The payments never matched the ceremony.
A group of runes would disappear and the orb would rise with the splendour of a new sun.
The resulting win behaved more like a refunded torch.
Still, the momentum changed the fortress.
Giant creatures entered more frequently.
A wolf took over an upper quarter.
A serpent occupied the lower centre.
Ravens and masks gathered in the narrow streets left between them.
Several groups came close.
Seven remained the sacred population of disappointment.
The orb kept growing whenever another species managed eight.
The court beneath it became less organised with every promotion.
Then Dominion Respins took over.
Certain symbols remained inside the fortress.
The grid darkened around the collected creatures.
The court stopped falling away completely and began accumulating.
Masks held their positions.
Ravens remained in red chambers.
Wolves waited in blue.
The Giant serpent settled across four cells and curled its tail around part of the collected army.
The multiplier continued climbing with each useful Respin.
The orb reached x11.
Its blue flame filled the right side of the screen.
The number had become so large beside the fortress that the masked rulers looked like attendants assigned to guard it.
Symbol Upgrades began crossing the collected court.
That should have improved the army.
It improved its wardrobe.
Runes split into creatures.
Ravens rose into wolves.
Wolves became higher-paying rulers.
One purple occupant climbed into a gold mask.
Every transformation increased value and reduced the number of symbols that still matched their neighbours.
A broad group of red ravens became three ravens, two wolves and one ruler.
A collection of blue runes received royal promotions until none belonged to the same class.
The Dominion was upgrading itself out of every possible victory.
The final ceremony produced the seven masked rulers.
They gathered around the Giant serpent.
Gold faces across the grid.
x11 burning beside them.
One more mask would have completed the court.
The Upgrade symbol passed through.
A lower creature became the seventh.
The remaining spaces opened beneath a rain of blue and purple light.
Rune.
Sigil.
Serpent.
No eighth ruler.
The feature ended with the Dominion’s entire supernatural government one monarch short.
The collected values returned less than the fortress had taken on the way in.
The orb dimmed.
x11 collapsed back to x1.
The Free Spins cleared.
Ordinary symbols returned.
I gave the reset fortress one final round to see what inherited the place.
A Giant green serpent landed beside the weakened orb.
Four cells.
One coiled body.
Its head leaned toward the blue flame.
The x1 reflected inside its eye.
No matching serpents gathered around it.
No Avalanche came.
The creature lowered itself around the pedestal until the orb sat inside the coils.
It looked less like a ruler guarding a multiplier and more like a dragon that had laid a very small mathematical egg.
I closed Shadow of Dominion clearly behind.
The fortress had promoted runes into monsters, monsters into rulers and rulers into seven identical pieces of an unfinished dynasty.
The Giant serpent owned four rooms.
The masked court owned seven faces.
The x11 orb owned everyone.
Only the eighth ruler had escaped dominion.
I blinked during the bonus. 888 Gold noticed.
